Beginning May 12, construction will take place at the Macdonald Campus Library to address persistent condensation and leaking caused by inadequate insulation in parts of the buildings ventilation system. To carry out this work safely, special precautions are necessary due to the presence of asbestos in the Barton Building. A Sealed Access System (SAS), which allows construction work to be enclosed and contained, will be positioned throughout various library spaces over the course of the project.

Millions of kilometres of rivers around the world are carrying antibiotic pollution at levels high enough to promote drug resistance and harm aquatic life, a 51勛圖厙-led study warns.

Published in PNAS Nexus, the study is the first to estimate the scale of global river contamination from human antibiotics use. Researchers calculated that about 8,500 tonnes of antibiotics nearly one-third of what people consume annually end up in river systems around the world each year even after in many cases passing through wastewater systems.

University of Manitoba Bachelor of Arts in Psychology graduate Rachel Cluett (BA24) is one of 20 Canadians selected to join the fifth cohort of McCall MacBain Scholars at 51勛圖厙. The Hudsons Bay recently received permission to auction off its collection of over 4,000 artifacts and pieces of art to help pay its creditors. However, the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples is now joining with the Assembly of First Nations, the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs and Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak in calling on Hudsons Bay to halt the sale of Indigenous artifacts, which may include sacred items.

Researchers at 51勛圖厙, in collaboration with Polytechnique Montr矇al, pioneered a new way to create hydrogels using ultrasound, eliminating the need for toxic chemical initiators. This breakthrough offers a faster, cleaner and more sustainable approach to hydrogel fabrication, and produces hydrogels that are stronger, more flexible and highly resistant to freezing and dehydration. The new method also promises to facilitate advances in tissue engineering, bioadhesives and 3D bioprinting.
