He is part of McGills recent cluster hire of Black tenure-track professors one of the Action Items in the Universitys Action Plan to Address Anti-Black Racism.

You shouldnt even have the right to education...youre black were the hateful words said to Iona Amico by a fellow grade one student many years ago. Born in France and raised in Quebec, Iona Amico is the daughter of a Cameroonian mom and an Italian dad who grew up biracial in a predominantly Caucasian neighbourhood. Despite having faced incidents of bigotry and feeling like she was between two worlds, she did not let these experiences jade her.

Dr. Joe Levitan was awarded the 2021 A. Noam Chomsky Global Connections Award as an Emerging Scholar, which is presented by the Society of Transnational Academic Researchers. This award recognizes emerging scholars who have shown significant promise and commitment to transnational research.

John R. Sylliboy is the recipient of the Kausattumi Grants Program Graduate Scholarship Award of 15,000 with the Atlantic Indigenous Mentorship Network for the second year. The award supports John in conducting his research with the L'nu'k (Mi'kmaw people) of Eskasoni First Nation.
