Geriatric Medicine Fellowship

Geriatric Medicine Subspecialty Training Program (R4+)

Program Overview

The 51³Ô¹ÏÍøGeriatric Medicine subspecialty training program is a coordinated two-year residency accredited by the Royal College of Physicians, designed to give trainees broad clinical experience across various institutional and community settings. It follows the Competence by Design (CBD) framework. Residents rotate through four main training sites for their core rotations. Elective rotations are available at affiliated hospitals and within a well-established network of hospitals across the province.

Our subspecialty program is renowned for its extensive range of high-quality clinical experiences, its ability to adapt to residents’ learning interests, and its well-developed, expert-led research curriculum.

Training Sites

The main training sites for the Geriatric Medicine program are the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Health Centre, the Jewish General Hospital, and St-Mary’s Hospital.

At the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Health Centre, residents rotate through various consultation services at the Montreal General Hospital and the Royal Victoria Hospital. These include multidisciplinary Emergency Department consultation services, ward consultation services, as well as specialized consultations in orthogeriatrics and geriatric trauma.

At the Jewish General Hospital, residents rotate through the Emergency consultations service and the state-of-the-art Geriatric Acute Care unit. The hospital has implemented the Hospital Elder Life Program and continues to lead in innovations in geriatric, patient-centred care at McGill.

At St-Mary’s Hospital, residents gain experience by rotating through a newly established multidisciplinary emergency consultation service and the geriatric acute care unit.

Both the Montreal General Hospital and the Jewish General Hospital host longitudinal clinics for trainees during their time with us.

Rotations

Residents are required to rotate through acute care geriatric medicine, including consultation services, geriatric acute care units, geriatrics psychiatry, long-term care, rehabilitation medicine, and ambulatory care. Additional training in palliative care, movement disorders, and falls and fracture prevention is encouraged and supported.

Residents regularly meet with the program director to discuss their learning needs and interests, resulting in a more tailored training curriculum.

Academic Curriculum

The Geriatric Medicine program features a well-structured didactic training curriculum based on objectives set by the Royal College of Physicians. The curriculum is delivered through dedicated teaching seminars and academic half-days during the academic year. This program is consistent across all Geriatric Medicine programs in Quebec, enabling residents to receive instruction from experts throughout the province.

Several other teaching activities are also held during the training year, including patient safety meetings, workshops on topics selected by residents, OSCEs, and training exams.

Residents are expected to undertake a research project during their training. The Division of Geriatric Medicine offers access to a broad range of research programs in the field of aging. These include studies on geroscience, health services delivery, memory disorders including dementia and Alzheimer's disease, falls prevention and bone health, pharmaco-epidemiology, delirium, geriatric nutrition, urinary incontinence, and women's health issues.

Participation in major national and international conferences is encouraged and facilitated whenever possible.
