Visiting Scholars in Aging Research

Senior and younger woman looking at a photo bookThis program is offered to health professionals (in training or established) from Canada and overseas. During their visit, the Scholars can conduct biomedical and/or clinical and/or population health and/or health services/policy research in geriatrics and gerontology. Although interactions are expected with several local academics, clinicians, biomedical researchers, and members of the multidisciplinary teams, the Scholars are under the supervision of a local expert in their area of interest. Although this is not a clinical training program, clinicians are allowed to join our clinicians during their daily rounds and clinical activities in the role of observers. This limited clinical exposure will depend on the availability of staff and local resources.

  • Learning Objectives: At the end of the program, the Visiting Scholars will:
    • Experience a learning experience at one of the leading academic geriatrics units in North America
    • Interact with academics and clinicians sharing their experiences and knowledge
    • Develop new research skills that could be applied to their organizations
    • Generate research outcomes (i.e., papers, abstracts, presentations)
    • Develop research collaborations with 51³Ô¹ÏÍøacademics
    • Join a community of Scholars that will share a similar interest in geriatric and gerontology research
  • Duration: Up to one year
  • Cost: CAD 600 for up to six months and CAD 1000 for 6 months to one year. Cost should be covered by the Scholar’s organization or demonstrated self-funding, including visa, accommodation, and travel expenses. On very rare occasions, visiting scholarships will be offered.
  • Structure/Schedule: The schedule is based on the selected area of research. For biomedical research, the Scholars are linked to one of our research teams and based at their corresponding labs. For clinical and population health research, the Scholars are assigned working stations at one of the hospitals. They will be expected to attend those clinics with a research component (i.e., Falls & Bone Health, Memory Clinic, etc.). Scholars are expected to attend the regular academic activities of the Department of Medicine and the Division of Geriatric Medicine, including (but not limited to) Grand Rounds, research seminars, and team meetings. The rest of the time, the Scholars are expected to dedicate their time to their allocated research project.
  • Evaluation: Based on the criteria and guidelines from the Scholar’s organization.
  • General Rules: The Visiting Scholars from overseas:
    • Should have written confirmation of full sponsorship (salary, travel, and personal expenses) from their Institution (or proof of self-funding) for the duration of this program.
    • They should have completed all the documentation required for their visa.
    • Should not apply for residency in Canada after they complete their training. Their travel dates should correspond to the expected starting and ending dates.
    • Are not expected to apply for any practice license in Canada
