Reading Groups

Reading Groups bring together scholars, post-docs, visiting researchers, and graduate students from across local universities in Montreal. The aim is to provide an intellectual platform where members can engage with the latest scholarship in the field and present and discuss their own original work around an area focus. Reading groups are open to all interested parties.

Current groups

Pre-Modern Medicine and Science (PREMAS)

The PREMAS reading group is concerned with the histories of medical and scientific knowledge, broadly construed, in global contexts before 1800. We meet monthly at SSoM to debate the latest scholarship in the field and to exchange ideas on our own ongoing research. Refreshments are provided, and all are welcome to join us!

Ethnography and Medicine: Psyche/Soma/Contact/Text

Part reading-group, part research-concept laboratory, "Ethnography and Medicine" explores dimensions of ethnography as a method between writing and a form of contact broadly conceptualized. The focus of the group is primarily on medical situations - inside and outside the clinic, in different clinical elsewheres - where concerns about psyche and soma (and environment and experience) are raised. Beginning in Fall 2025, the group will meet monthly at SSoM (3647 Peel) to discuss recent scholarship and to share ongoing work and ideas that circulate in and around these topics. Refreshments are provided, and all are welcome! Group organizers: Todd Meyers (SSoM) and Vincent Laliberté (Psychiatry, Anthropology)
