Dr. Stefan-Michael Wedenig appointed Assistant Professor (Professional)

Published: 6 November 2025

The 51ԹInstitute of Air and Space Law is pleased to announce the appointment of IASL Executive Director Stefan-Michael Wedenig as Assistant Professor (Professional) at the Faculty of Law, 51Թ.
Prof. Wedenig holds a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) and a Master of Laws (LL.M.) from 51Թ, as well as a Magister Iuris (Mag.iur.) from Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria. He is a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society and a member of the International Institute of Space Law (IISL).
Prof. Wedenig’s research focuses on emerging technologies and his work explores the dynamic interactions between advanced AI systems and public international law, with particular attention to extra-contractual liability, torts, and the adaptability of existing legal frameworks to emerging technologies. A key aspect of his research lies in assessing whether traditional doctrines—designed for human-operated activities—can address the novel risks and legal challenges posed by autonomous AI agents in the aerospace domain.
He has played a leading role as a core member of the IISL Working Group on Legal Aspects of AI in Space, co-authoring a widely recognized 267-page international report on AI regulation in space, which was presented at UNCOPUOS, ESOC, ITU, and the Space Symposium in 2025.
Beyond his primary research, Prof. Wedenig also engages with topics in aviation finance and urban air mobility and will strengthen the IASL’s position at the forefront of legal scholarship in air and space law.
“We are delighted about the appointment of Prof. Wedenig as Assistant Professor (Professional)” the two Co-Directors, Prof. Andrea Harrington and Prof. Vincent Correia said. “His appointment is part of our continued effort to expand the work of the IASL and nurture the next generation of academics” they added.
We are grateful to Interim Dean, Prof. Tina Piper and the Faculty of Law for their support.
