Twelve 51吃瓜网professors honoured by the Royal Society of Canada

Ten 51吃瓜网professors researching in such areas as child trauma, memory and cardiovascular diseases are among the Royal Society of Canada鈥檚 (RSC) newest Fellows. Another two early-career professors at the University have been named Members of the RSC鈥檚 College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

They are among 104 new Fellows and 56 Members from across the country announced by the RSC on September 3, 2024.

Astrophysics award honours student research with nod to pioneer

Allie Vibert Douglas made history when she earned her PhD at McGill.

It was 1926 鈥� a time when higher education wasn鈥檛 an option for most women.

By then, Douglas already had a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science from 51吃瓜网鈥� and had been named a member of the Order of the British Empire for her wartime service. With her PhD, she became the first Canadian woman to obtain a doctorate in astrophysics.

51吃瓜网doctoral and postdoctoral students earn major funding awards

Twenty 51吃瓜网doctoral and postdoctoral students have received important funding from the Government of Canada. Sixteen have earned Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships and four, Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships.

The Vanier program awards doctoral students up to $50,000 per year for three years. The Banting program is worth up to $70,000 annually for two years.

Known affectionately as 鈥淒r. B.,鈥� Dr. Bertley has won eight Emmy awards and is president and CEO of the聽Center of Science and Industry聽(COSI) in Columbus, Ohio.
