Contingent régulier

Contingent régulier positions are funded by the Quebec Ministry of Health. Applications are accepted via for the R-1 level.

Mandatory Candidate Eligibility R-1

  • Must hold Canadian citizenship or be a Permanent Resident of Canada.
    • EXCEPTION: Visa students who are completing their Medical Degree in Quebec may apply via this route. Visa students who are completing their Medical Degrees elsewhere in the Canada must apply via the Contingent Particulier.Ìý
  • Must not have undertaken previous postgraduate (residency and/or fellowship) training in Canada or in the USA.
  • Must meet the Criteria for recency of practice or medical studies:
    • Applicants must be able to demonstrate with official documentation that they have, within the four years preceding the admission application:

      • completed their undergraduate medical education (Doctor of Medicine, MD); or

      • been in a residency program; or

      • practiced medicine independently*; or

      • successfully completed the CEDIS program (assessment/orientation session and medical skills and knowledge refresher internship)

      • Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate that they have had a sustained and continuous independent clinical practice for a minimum duration of one year within the four years preceding the application.

        * Please note that observerships and telemedicine are not considered independent clinical practice.

Eligible Applicant Categories R-1

  • Candidates fromÌýCanadian medical schools must hold aÌýMedical Degree by July 1stÌýof the admission year.Ìý
  • Candidates fromÌýUS medical schools or osteopathic schoolsÌý(accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation) who received their MD before July 1st, 2025 are not required to complete the Ìýequivalence process.
  • Candidates from US medical schools or osteopathic schools (accredited by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation) who received their MD after July 1st, 2025 must have equivalence from the .*
  • International Medical Graduates (IMGs) must have equivalence from theÌý.*

NOTE: The (CMQ) verifies all medical degrees issued by a Canadian medical school outside of Quebec and by all American medical schools.ÌýThis is required in order for the CMQ to issue the resident training card, which is required in order to be able to train in Quebec hospitals and be paid by the Quebec Ministry of Health.

NOTE: Individuals who participate in the 1st iteration of the CaRMS match but are not matched can participate in the 2nd iteration. Individuals may participate in the 2nd iteration of CaRMS in Quebec if they received the equivalency of their MD diploma from the CMQ between November 27th, 2025 and March 17, 2026.
