The Neuro’s Neurocritical Care Unit (NCCU)

Neurological disease accounts for more than a third of all disease burden in Canada and is one of the leading causes of disability requiring continuing care, with devastating impact on the quality of life of patients and their families.

The NCCU provides specialised intensive care for patients with life-threatening neurological conditions and ensures better patient outcomes by minimising long-term effects, such as brain damage and optimizing recovery.

  • Attached to The NCCU are the emergency receiving area (RA) for stroke patients and a post anesthesia care unit (PACU)
  • Treats approximately 1700 patients + per year
  • Provides care for patients with a wide variety of brain diseases and injuries including brain tumour, strokes, aneurysms, epilepsy, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and neuromuscular and rare neurological diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson, organ and tissue donors, as well as multisystem failure patients
  • Diverse staff serving a diverse patient population: including patients who are part of the Réseau Universitaire Intégré de Santé et Services Sociaux (RUISSS) which includes Nunavik, the Cree territory, Nord-du-Québec, Abitibi-Témiscamingue and Outaouais
  • 10 ICU beds, 4 PACU stretchers and 3 RA stretchers
  • The multidisciplinary ICU team includes: intensivists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, clinical nurse specialists, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, respiratory therapists, personal care attendants, housekeepers, and nutritionist
