A new vision for rehabilitation sciences

Transforming the 51ԹSchool of Physical and Occupational Therapy

It is 1969 and the 51ԹSchool of Physical and Occupational Therapy (SPOT) has set up shop in Hosmer House. With its fine orange sandstone and opulent interior design, it is one of the most magnificent mansions of Montreal’s Golden Square Mile—but an old one, ill suited to teaching and learning even then. On a slope. With stairs. No room for a clinic. Or new technology.

For decades, students, faculty, and staff at SPOT have adhered to an ethos of “making do.” And for over 60 years, making do enabled the School to go far. While making do, it became the first in Canada to belong to a faculty of medicine. While making do, it became the first in Canada to offer a Bachelor of Science in Physical and Occupational Therapy. Still while making do, it became the first in Canada to launch a doctoral program in Rehabilitation Science.

Moving forward to a new century, making do can cut it no more. Not for a world-renowned leader in rehabilitation science research whose investigators are working collaboratively towards new discoveries and their mobilization in clinical practice. And certainly not for a top-ranked academic institution delivering enriched educational programs designed to ensure that the rehabilitation practitioners of tomorrow are equipped with the knowledge and skills to best respond to the needs of society.

The School has a remarkable history, marked by a tradition of ongoing innovation and leadership. The School has global recognition, with research partnerships around the world. The School has endless potential… but its weatherbeaten premises are threatening its survival.

Now is the time to ensure the School's future.
