      LING 201 – Introduction to Linguistics (3 credits) section 001

      Teaching Schedule: Monday, Wednesday, Friday 12:35PM - 1:25PM

      Course details: General introduction to linguistics, the scientific study of human language. Covers the core theoretical subfields of linguistics: phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Also provides background on other subfields including sociolinguistics, pragmatics, historical linguistics, linguistic variation, and language acquisition.

      Salary (current rate for 3-credit course teaching): $11,090
      Salary (rate for 3-credit course teaching as of September 1st, 2025): $11,479

      Position Summary:

      A Course assignment includes all or part of the following teaching activities:

      a) preparation of the Course and Course plan; b) delivery of the Course; c) evaluation of students; d) submitting to the University a report on student attendance and student grades; e) supervision of Teaching Assistants or any other teaching support staff; f) upon request, review of their students’ grades; g) meeting with students, being available to answer questions and give advice concerning Course content and requirements;

      Employees shall perform their duties in compliance with the Pedagogical Regulation and as specified in the administrative directives of the Hiring Unit. An Employee shall use appropriate pedagogical methods and material.

      Teaching Qualification Requirements: Successful completion of at least PhD Evaluation 1 or equivalent experience.

      Course details: Linguistics : Transcription, identification, and production of speech sounds. Introduction to the acoustic properties of speech sounds, acoustic analysis of speech, and auditory phonetics.

      Position Summary: Prepare and teach conferences with small groups of students, attend TA meetings, grade assignments, midterms and final exams, hold office hours. Other tasks associated with the position/course.

      Qualifications:Applicants must be graduate students in good standing in the Department of Linguistics at 51Թ. Applicants require a minimum GPA of 3.5 in the first-level core courses in Linguistics (Phonetics, Phonology, Morphology, Syntax and Semantics).

      Hourly Salary: $37.34

      Visitors

      Researchers

      The Department of Linguistics is pleased to accept applications of researchers who wish to stay in the Department as visiting researchers. A visiting researcher holds a PhD degree, normally holds a permanent position elsewhere, and normally stays in the Department for a maximum of one year. Given limited resources, including limited availability of space and administrative support, the Department is only able to accommodate a small number of visiting researchers each year. Visiting researchers are offered a desk in a shared office as well as access to the 51Թlibrary and email. Unfortunately, the Department is unable to provide visiting researchers with financial support.

      How To Apply

      Before submitting an application, prospective visiting researchers should have contacted a faculty member in the Department who has agreed to serve as a sponsor.

      Applications should include:

      1. A statement of purpose indicating the beginning and ending dates of the visit, the research goals for the visit, as well as the relation of the proposed research to the research of the sponsoring faculty member
      2. A Curriculum Vitae
      3. A writing sample written in English (normally a recent published paper).

      The Department may also request letters of recommendation. Applications should be submitted (preferably by email in electronic format) to:

      Application Deadlines

      Applications should be submitted at least 4 to 6 months before the intended start date of the visit. In particular, visiting researcher applications are due on March 1st for visits beginning the following Fall Term (which starts in September) and July 1st for visits beginning the following Winter Term (which starts in January). Acceptance decisions are communicated to applicants shortly after these deadlines.

      Graduate Students

      The Department of Linguistics is pleased to accept applications of graduate students who wish to stay in the Department as visiting graduate students. Visiting graduate students are registered in a graduate degree program at another university, and their research interests must connect well to those of the Department.

      For different categories for visiting the Department as a graduate student, please see the Visiting, Exchange and Special Students page on McGill'sFuture Graduate Students website.Please note that the Department does not offer Special Student admission at the graduate level.

      Given limited resources, including limited availability of space and administrative support, the Department is only able to accommodate a small number of visiting students each year. Visiting students are offered shared office space if possible, as well as access to the 51Թlibrary and email. Unfortunately, the Department is unable to provide visiting students with financial support.
