International postdoctoral fellows who hold a valid work permit for a period of at least 6 months qualify for the Quebec's provincial health plan .
They will be subject to a 3-month waiting period for the RAMQ benefits from the time their application is filed with the RAMQ office.

During the 3-month waiting period, postdocs can not be covered by the International Health Insurance (IHI) plan.
The current administrative structure of the International Health Insurance plan does not accommodate contracts that are 3-months or less.
However, those who are in the 3-month waiting period or whose聽valid work permits are for less than 6 months can obtain temporary medical coverage.
This temporary medical coverage can be purchased from a private insurer.
