A degree in ESS provides a solid scientific background that could be used to pursue graduate studies in many branches of science, including systems biology, Earth sciences, oceanography, astrobiology or sustainability science, or as a background for further studies of policy or business.

A degree in Earth System Sciences can also be directly applied for careers in:

  • Environmental consulting
  • Environmental impact assessment
  • Non-governmental organizations
  • Product life cycle management
  • Software development companies
  • Insurance companies
  • Earth observation
  • University and other research-oriented organizations
  • Provincial and federal government departments (e.g., Environment and Climate Change Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Space Agency, Statistics Canada)
  • Many others in the environmental science and policy sectors

Past graduates from 51³Ô¹ÏÍønotably work in organizations concerned with assessing suitable sites for new industrial facilities, cleaning contaminated sites, studying energy and resource use for recycling or waste disposal, using drone and satellite imagery to observe greenhouse gas emissions, evaluating risks of natural disasters to inform property insurance premiums, or developing algorithms to assist farmers with choices of crops and soil management practices.
