March 13th Keynote Speaker
Katia Opalka, B.A. (History) '92, B.C.L. & LL.B. '97 (51³Ô¹ÏÍø), Counsel, Environmental Law

Bio: Katia attended Howard S. Billings High School in Chateauguay, spent a year as an exchange student with AFS in Barcelona and then graduated with first class honours from the Dawson College Liberal Arts programme. ÌýShe came to 51³Ô¹ÏÍøin 1989 to study Canadian history and political theory. After graduating she took a gap year. ÌýDuring that year she spent two months studying Italian in Sienna with the University of Toronto, wrote the LSAT, spent the fall in Berlin auditing classes at Humboldt University, wrote the foreign service exam, and spent the spring as an intern in the congressional and legal affairs department of the Canadian embassy in Washington, D.C. ÌýShe then studied Civil Law and Common Law at McGill, studied for and passed the Quebec bar, and then did her articles and got hired by McCarthy Tetrault, one of Canada's big law firms. ÌýShe specialized in advising corporations on environmental law issues in corporate transactions. ÌýAfter three years of very hard work she joined the NAFTA environmental commission as an investigator. ÌýIn 2008 she returned to private practice at another big law firm, and now she runs her own consultancy. Katia is an adjunct professor at the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøSchool of Environment and is very active in the Canadian Bar Association. ÌýShe is frequently invited to speak at conferences on the topic of environmental law and has published many articles dealing with environmental law and policy issues.
