The International Academy of Comparative Law at 100: The ‘Young Discipline’ of Comparative Law

In November 2024, the International Academy of Comparative Law (IACL) held its at the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. The event convened approximately 150 scholars from around the world to engage in discussions on the past, present, and future of comparative law.

Secretary General of the IACL Prof. Gary F. Bell (National University of Singapore), Maria-Chiara Malaguti (President of UNIDROIT), and Helge Dedek served as “General Reporters”, overseeing one of the three thematic axes: "The History of Comparative Law and the Academy," "Teaching Comparative Law," and "The Future of Comparative Law." Their responsibilities included developing the call for papers, organizing panels, inviting speakers, and shaping the overall program.

Professor Dedek led the thematic axis on "The History of Comparative Law and the Academy," a significant focus for the Academy's centennial celebration. An edited collection based on the submissions received for this thematic axis is currently in preparation under contract with Brill.
