Social status movement in first world countries by Indigenous people can be seen in the growth of successful professional and entrepreneurial classes where both w ealth creation and social power are significant resources. Data from Austr alia\, Canada and the United States on a variety of social mobility indica tors show an increase over the past two decades as Indigenous people becom e increasingly upwardly mobile. But the public and academic discourses con tinue to perpetuate the belief that social mobility impacts somewhat negat ively on Indigenous people by placing cultural identity in conflict with c olonial capitalism. Indigenous entrepreneurs are used as a case study exam ple in this article to reveal how the duality between ‘profit’ and ‘purpos e’ creates an impossible tension when Indigenous cultural identity is fram ed as ‘at risk’ for individuals who are working towards being socially mob ile. A discursive colonial mindset is thus a central and enduring problema tic organising principle of the field of Indigenous entrepreneurship\, and other fields such as the media\, policy and entertainment requiring futur e research to discharge.\n DTSTART:20191018T163000Z DTEND:20191018T180000Z SUMMARY:Decolonizing Indigenous Social Mobility: Uniting Identity and Weal th\, talk given by Assistant Professor Rochelle Côté URL:/sociology/channels/event/decolonizing-indigenous- social-mobility-uniting-identity-and-wealth-talk-given-assistant-professor -301388 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
