Substantial scientific evidence and environmental activism have resulted in the recognition and remediation of many of the problems we have created. Still\, sustained pop ulation and economic growth and the scale of the accompanying environmenta l degradation outpace our ability to comprehend and solve problems. Our mo st pressing environmental issues transcend political boundaries\, and we h ave entered an era of truly ‘wicked’ issues whose solutions challenge the human imagination.\n\nDr. Nigel T. Roulet obtained a joint Honours B.Sc. i n Biology and Geography (1979) and a M.Sc. in Watershed Science (1981) fro m Trent University\, Peterborough\, Ontario\, and his PhD in Physical Geog raphy from McMaster University\, Hamilton\, Ontario. He started his academ ic career in the Department of Geography at York University\, Toronto in 1 985 and moved to 51³Ô¹ÏÍø in 1994 as an Associate Professor. He w as the Director of the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøSchool of Environment (2003 – 2008) and the Director of the Centre for Climate and Global Change Research (1996-2002) and the Director of the Global Environmental and Climate Change Research C entre (2011-2014) at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø. He became the Chair of the Departm ent of Geography in 2014 and is continuing until 2024. He has served in va rious grant and scholarship review panels for Natural Sciences and Enginee ring Research Council of Canada (NSERC). Nigel’s research interests focus on the interactions among hydrology\, climatology\, and ecosystems process es in peatlands and forested catchments of the temperate\, boreal\, and ar ctic regions. He has published over 200 scientific papers\, book chapters and monographs and was a contributing author to the 2nd through 4th scient ific assessments of climate change by the United Nation’s Intergovernmenta l Panel on Climate Change that won the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. He served a s a member of the Ontario Far North Act Science Advisory Panel from 2010 t o 2014. His teaching includes introductory physical geography and environm ental systems\, environmental hydrology\, systems modelling for sustainabi lity\, and global biogeochemical cycles. He is currently an Associate Edit or of Global Biogeochemical Cycles\, and Ecosystems. In 2014\, Nigel was e lected to the Academy of Science of the Royal Society of Canada.\n\nWatch the recording Discover the Mini-Science series\n\n\n\n \n Mini-Science is br ought to you with the generous support of the Trottier Family Foundation. \n\n\n\n \n Mini-Science has been certified a Virtual Sustainable Event by t he McGill Office of Sustainability.\n\n DTSTART:20211007T220000Z DTEND:20211007T230000Z SUMMARY:Bicentennial Mini-Science: The future of the environment URL:/science/channels/event/bicentennial-mini-science- future-environment-326932 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
