About the presentation: Active learning is a buzz word in higher educa tion and it's easy to think of it as just another in a long line of educat ional fads. Even instructors who believe active learning is a good thing m ay see it as something that simply takes too much time and effort to imple ment in engineering courses. This session is designed to introduce quick a nd simple active learning techniques that are effective\, require little p reparation or class time\, and which generate little or no student resista nce. The audience is encouraged to share their ideas on the barriers hinde ring faster diffusion of these active learning techniques into engineering classrooms. About the speaker: Dr. Prince is a Professor of Chemical Eng ineering and the Rooke Professor of Engineering at Bucknell University. He serves as co-Director of the National Effective Teaching Institute and “H ow to Engineer Engineering Education”\, both well-established offerings th at attract a national audience of engineering faculty each year. His curre nt research examines how to increase the use of research-based instruction al strategies by engineering faculty as well as focusing specifically on r epairing persistent student misconceptions in the thermal sciences. His ed ucational accomplishments have led to an invitation in 2012 to be the Cono coPhillips Lecturer in Chemical Engineering Education at Oklahoma State Un iversity as well as being named to the Robert L. Rooke Professorship in En gineering at Bucknell. He was honoured by the Institution of Chemical Engi neers with the Hutchison Medal in 2009\, Bucknell University’s Lindback Aw ard for Distinguished Teaching in 2008\, and in 2004 received the American Society of Engineering Education’s Mid-Atlantic Section Outstanding Teach ing Award.
