It’s a lesson that has the potential to transform even common online experiences\, including how websites recommend products and how photo albums recognize faces. \nP lease join us as we welcome Prof. Hinton for an eye-opening talk on machin e learning. A cocktail reception will follow the lecture. \n \nAbout the K illam Prizes\nEvery year the Killam Program offers awards to outstanding C anadian scholars working in the humanities\, social sciences\, natural sci ences\, health sciences and engineering. These awards are among Canada’s m ost distinguished research awards. They are made possible through the Kill am Trusts by a bequest of Mrs. Dorothy J. Killam\, and a gift she made bef ore her death in 1965. Recipients are chosen by a committee of 15 eminent Canadian scholars appointed by the Canada Council.\n \nAbout Geoffry Hinto n\nProf. Geoffrey Hinton’s contributions to the development of several of the most successful machine learning algorithms have had\, among other thi ngs\, a direct impact on how we use the Internet today. His algorithms hav e had a strong influence on psychology and neuroscience. They are also bei ng used for a huge variety of applications including searching and recomme nding products on the web\, interpreting images\, improving the yield of c hemical plants\, and recognizing speech.\nHe directs the program in Neural Computation and Adaptive Perception for the Canadian Institute for Advanc ed Research\, and his research has contributed to both science and enginee ring. His 2007 Google Techtalk\, an introduction to his recent research on deep learning\, has been viewed over 200\,000 times on YouTube.\nClick he re to read Prof. Hinton’s full bio.
