Whether neurons cod e using the rate or timing of their spikes has been much debated. In my ta lk\, I will explain how a set of neurons can combine (or multiplex) rate a nd temporal coding using differentially synchronized spikes. I will also d emonstrate that spike synchrony is important for sensation as revealed by the presence or absence of paresthesia during spinal cord stimulation at d ifferent frequencies. This and other results speak to the importance of ne uron excitability – how ion channels interact to control spike generation. Using optogenetic experiments\, I will discuss how axon excitability is o ptimized for reliable spike propagation. Lastly\, I will discuss the chall enges of regulating excitability by adjusting various ion channel densitie s.\n DTSTART:20230919T160000Z DTEND:20230919T170000Z SUMMARY:QLS Seminar Series - Steven Prescott URL:/qls/channels/event/qls-seminar-series-steven-pres cott-350913 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
