They\, along with many statisticians\, are unsure of when to use traditional statistical mod els (SM) as opposed to ML to solve analytical problems related to diagnosi s\, prognosis\, treatment selection\, and health outcomes. And many advoca tes of ML do not know enough about SM to be able to appropriately compare performance of SM and ML. ML experts are particularly prone to not grasp t he impact of the choice of measures of predictive performance. In this tal k I attempt to define what makes ML distinct from SM\, and to define the c haracteristics of applications for which ML is likely to offer advantages over SM\, and vice-versa. The talk will also touch on the vast difference between prediction and classification and how this leads to many misunders tandings in the ML world. Other topics to be convered include the minimum sample size needed for ML\, and problems ML algorithms have with absolute predictive accuracy (calibration).\n DTSTART:20180918T160000Z DTEND:20180918T170000Z LOCATION:Room 1027\, McIntyre Medical Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3G 1 Y6\, 3655 promenade Sir William Osler SUMMARY:Seminar Series in Quantitative Life Sciences and Medicine URL:/qls/channels/event/seminar-series-quantitative-li fe-sciences-and-medicine-289420 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
