In natura l systems\, the movement of matter\, organic and inorganic\, and of organi sms can greatly impact ecosystem persistence and functioning over a broad range of spatial scales\, from microbiomes to the biosphere. Meta-ecosyste m theories addresses these questions by predicting the dynamics of network s of ecosystems\, partially connected by the movement of matter and indivi duals. I will introduce the concept of meta-ecosystems and its relationshi ps to other similar ecological theories. I will then discuss recent work f rom our group based on mathematical models of meta-ecosystem dynamics.
