Unless sung to an optimis ed melody\, Cantonese lyrics may be incomprehensible or gravely misunderst ood––‘lord’ could be misheard as ‘pig’. While tone-melody relationships ha ve been addressed in Cantonese operas and Cantonese popular music\, Canton ese choral music––a fast-growing genre of contemporary music in Hong Kong– –remains a largely unexplored genre. This study aims to unpack the problem s\, practices\, and potentialities of text-setting in Cantonese choral mus ic. It offers solutions for overcoming text-setting constraints\, and anal yses the creative and notational practices present in recent works by Hong Kong composers. The research highlights the compositional and theoretical potentialities within this genre for listeners\, composers\, and performe rs\, particularly in the context of algorithmic and AI applications\, fost ering a greater appreciation for Cantonese musics.\n\nBiography: Kai-Young Chan is Assistant Professor of Composition at The Chinese University of H ong Kong. Performed in 20 countries\, his award-winning compositions are p ublished by Edition Peters\, Universal Edition\, and Navona Records. Throu gh digital platforms and open-access applications\, his research on Canton ese musics fosters interdisciplinary collaborations between music\, neuros cience\, and AI.\n DTSTART:20250409T203000Z DTEND:20250409T220000Z LOCATION:A-832\, Elizabeth Wirth Music Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1E3\, 527 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Doctoral Colloquium (Music) | Kai-Young Chan URL:/music/channels/event/doctoral-colloquium-music-ka i-young-chan-364823 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
