I will summari ze recent work that Sylvain Margot and I have done on Cipriano de Rore\, a nd I will apply it to questions about the broader enterprise of musical an alysis. Using software developed in the CRIM Project (Citations: The Renai ssance Imitation Mass\, Freedman)\, we found surprising deployment of moti ves in a collection of Rore’s madrigals\, particularly motives that we mig ht be tempted to dismiss as “contrapuntal fillers.” This work provoked the following questions: Can we only find what we are looking for in a piece of music\, or can we be surprised? Does our experience inevitably determin e our focus\, or can an alien mind (the computer’s) bring a fresh perspect ive to the object of analysis?\n\nBiography: Peter Schubert studied with N adia Boulanger\, received his degrees from Columbia\, and has taught at Mc Gill’s Schulich School of Music since 1990. He has published two textbooks on counterpoint (one with Christoph Neidhöfer)\, recorded CDs of choral m usic\, and posted videos on Renaissance improvisation to YouTube. In 2015 the 4. Leipziger ImprovisationsFestival said “Peter Schubert gilt als groß er Improvisations-Guru Nordamerikas.” In 2019 he received the Gail Boyd de Stwolinski Prize for Lifetime Achievement in Music Theory Teaching and Sc holarship.\n DTSTART:20241002T203000Z DTEND:20241002T220000Z LOCATION:A-832\, Elizabeth Wirth Music Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1E3\, 527 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Doctoral Colloquium (Music) | Peter Schubert URL:/music/channels/event/doctoral-colloquium-music-pe ter-schubert-359848 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
