Participation:This ensemble is open to all music students, and 51³Ô¹ÏÍø students from other faculties (with permission of the instructor; previous music experience is required).

Founded in 2005 by Shawn Mativetsky, the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøTabla Ensemble learns and performs traditional North Indian tabla compositions from the Benares baj (style). Students learn basic tabla techniques, repertoire, and performance practices, with the goal of developing advanced rhythm and improvisation skills, as well as an appreciation for North Indian classical music. Over the course of each semester, the group learns solo tabla repertoire, culminating in an Indian classical tabla soli performance.

The Tabla Ensemble is open to all students in the Schulich School of Music. All students will need their own set of tabla. If you don't own a set, shawn.mativetsky [at] mcgill.ca (please contact Shawn Mativetsky), and he will happily guide you in your purchase. A limited number of 51³Ô¹ÏÍøtabla are available for loan to music students; please contact Shawn to reserve a set. Unless graduating in the fall, students should ideally register for both the fall and winter semesters.
