Shavuot, Hajj, Eid al-Adha, and Pentecost

Commemorating Divine Encounters

This week, there are several holidays that commemorate past receipt of sacred knowledge, texts, and/or gifts. Each offers rich communal and personal faith experiences.

Shavuot wheat, Torah, and cheeseShavuot is happening June 1-3 this year. This festival celebrates when G-d gave the Torah to the Jewish people on Mount Sinai. It marks the conclusion of seven weeks of personal and communal introspection following Pesaḥ (Passover). Shavuot, meaning "weeks" in Hebrew, is observed by studying the Torah all night, decorating with flowers and greenery, attending synagogue services, and enjoying traditional meals that feature dairy, especially cheese (cheesecake for dessert is a popular choice). There are many different interesting , many from verses in the Torah, such as the promise to the Israelites of a "land of milk and honey."

Hajj being celebrated in MeccaJune 5, 2025 is The Day of Ḥajj in Islam. This day commemorates the last revelation to the Prophet at Mount ʻArafāt shortly before his death. Hajj is an annual global pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, a once-in-a-lifetime five-pillar obligation for Muslims who are physically and financially able. It takes place over several days, and involves specific rites and rituals, including circling the Kaaba, walking between the hills of Safa and Marwa, and spending time on Mount Arafat. Hajj is seen as a life-changing journey of purification when pilgrims renew their faith, grow spiritually, and reflect on their lives. For a fun and fascinating Hajj story, check out this .

June 6 will be Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice), another major holiday for Muslims. This day is the concluding act of pilgrimage, and is observed even when not on pilgrimage. In commemoration of sacrifices Ibrahim (Abraham) made in response to divine direction, Muslims offer sheep, goats, cattle & camels, and then distribute the meat to the poor. This is a festive day to gather with family and friends.

drawing of Jesus's disciples receiving "flames" of the holy spiritJune 8, 2025 is Pentecost in Christianity, which commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples of Jesus following his ascension. Services may involve hymns and prayers focused on the Holy Spirit and the desire to receive it. Some churches perform baptisms, confirmations or ordinations on this day. Decorations are symbolic of the holy spirit―doves, candles, and the color red, representative of "tongues of fire" that descended on the apostles, giving them power to speak foreign languages.
