DESCRIPTION:Workshop Overview:\n\nThe ISS Program is proud to present a wor
 kshop on intellectual property from the Canadian Intellectual Property Off
 ice (CIPO) and the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada.  CIPO is res
 ponsible registering patents\, trade-marks\, copyrights\, industrial desig
 ns and integrated circuit topographies in Canada.  Their accomplished IP l
 eaders will introduce the Canadian IP system and raise awareness of IP by 
 introducing basic concepts such as\n\n\n	the importance and strategic use o
 f IP\;\n	an introduction to trade secrets\, patents\, trade-marks\, copyrig
 hts and industrial designs\;\n	useful resources and tips\;\n	links to IP pub
 lications and on-line tools\; and\n	contact information.\n\n\nMr .  Christi
 an Cawthorn will be delivering the presentation called 'IP: What's in it f
 or you?' followed by the delivery of the Samatha Chang Case Study outlined
  below.\n\nParticipants will also have the chance to explore and apply iss
 ues in IP by participating in a case study with an experienced discussion 
 leader.   The case study (see below) will cover:\n\n\n	Value of trade-marks
  and patents and of trade secrets\n	Types of IP \n	Defining and protecting a
  new discovery\n	Disclosure\n	Criteria for patentability\n	Value of informati
 on found in IP databases\n	IP ownership\n\n\nStudents are expected to read

 op:\n\nSamantha Chang: Who Owns the Invention?\n\nJust after she turned 18
  and before starting classes at Provincial Technical University (PTU)\, Sa
 mantha Chang got a summer job in the PTU engineering research lab. She wor
 ks in the laboratory of Professor John Milbourne. Samantha's status is unc
 lear as the professor pays a small monthly stipend out of a miscellaneous 
 research account for work delivered.\n\nThat summer Professor Milbourne's 
 lab was puzzling out a quality control problem faced by a client\, AutoPar
 tsCo. As part of this project\, Samantha develops and implements an idea w
 orth thousands of dollars to the client company. The client wants to file 
 a patent on the idea.\n\nSample questions\n\n\n	    What rights does Samant
 ha Chang have regarding her idea?\n	    Is Samantha's idea patentable since
  it uses existing technology?\n	    What rights does the company\, AutoPart
