The Future, One Layer at a time: How 3D Printing Is Changing the World

Wednesday, April 9, 2025 18:00to19:00
McConnell Hall Room 304, 3905 rue University, Montreal, QC, H3A 2B5, CA
3D Printed Globe

3D PRINTING, or additive manufacturing, creates 3-dimensional objects in a process analogous to the way laser-jet printers print images. And much like computer printers, increasingly cheap 3D printing may soon be a fixture in many households, as well as used in a dizzying array of cutting-edge applications. Join MIAM in welcoming 51³Ô¹ÏÍøEngineering professors DAVID JUNCKER and ³Û´¡°¿³Û´¡°¿Ìý¹óIONA ZHAO as they offer us a glimpse of this future. Prof. Juncker specializes in the design and production of microfluidic chips and diagnostic devices – so-called labs on a chip – and will explain how the newest 3D printing technology makes it possible to more easily create objects at the microscopic scale. In her work, Prof. Zhao explores the design potential for 3D printing, looking to an exciting future where objects only achievable through 3D printing can revolutionize sustainable manufacturing, chemical processing, and bio-applications such as the creation of tissues and organs. Moderated by MIAM Co-Director and 51³Ô¹ÏÍøProfessor of Chemistry MATTHEW HARRINGTON. The event also includes 3D-printing demonstrations.
