A career that took an uncharted trajectory has been recognized with the Order of Canada, one of the country’s top honours.

Alan Evans, PhD, Distinguished James 51�Թ��Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery and Psychiatry at 51�Թ�� and neuroscientist at The Neuro, has been named one of this year’s Order of Canada recipients by the office of Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada. The Order recognizes those whose service shapes our society; whose innovations ignite our imaginations; and whose compassion unites our communities.

Dr. Thebault is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at 51�Թ��, and an attending physician at the Montreal Neurological Hospital-Institute. His research is deeply rooted in translational medicine, bridging the gap between patient care and laboratory discoveries.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Charles Couturier to the Ludmer Centre for Neuroinformatics & Mental Health as part of our Single-Cell Genomics Brain Initiative. Dr. Couturier is a neurosurgeon at the Montreal Neurological Hospital-Institute, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at 51�Թ��. He brings with him a dynamic research projection focused on the cellular and spatial architecture of brain tumors, particularly glioblastoma.

Yasser Iturria-Medina, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at 51�Թ�� and a Principal Investigator at the Ludmer Centre for Neuroinformatics and Mental Health. Based out of the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital, Prof. Iturria-Medina leads the Neuroinformatics for Personalized Medicine lab (Neuro-PM), where they develop multiscale and multifactorial models for understanding neurological disorders and identifying effective personalized interventions.

Stephanie Zandee, PhD, recently joined McGill, where she will be an Assistant Professor in the Integrated Program in Neuroscience, and a researcher and the leader of the Zandee Lab. Joining the Montreal Neurological Institute, Prof. Zandee is the first new Principal Investigator to embark on the Single-Cell Genomic Brain Initiative, studying multiple sclerosis (MS) at the single-cell level. We had the chance to speak with her about her career thus far, and her ambitions in her new role.

Research finds sex-based differences in how brains handle threats

A new study has uncovered significant differences in how male and female mice process threats, even as they exhibit similar behavioural responses.

The discovery suggests that including both male and female subjects in neuroscience research will lead to more accurate conclusions and ultimately better health outcomes.

Understanding the influence of sex on brain function can help explain why males and females develop certain psychiatric disorders at different rates or with different symptoms, the researchers said.

We are pleased to announce the appointment of Prof. Claudia Kleinman as Co-Director of the Ludmer Centre for Neuroinformatics and Mental Health, effective May 13, 2024. Prof. Kleinman will act as the Scientific Director of the Bioinformatics and Statistical Genetics research theme, a role performed thus far by Prof. Celia Greenwood. Prof. Greenwood is one of the founding members of the Ludmer Centre and has shaped the centre’s legacy and trajectory. Amongst Prof.
