Welcome Charles Couturier, MD, PhD, to the Ludmer Centre!

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Charles Couturier to the Ludmer Centre for Neuroinformatics & Mental Health as part of our Single-Cell Genomics Brain Initiative. Dr. Couturier is a neurosurgeon at the Montreal Neurological Hospital-Institute, and an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø. He brings with him a dynamic research projection focused on the cellular and spatial architecture of brain tumors, particularly glioblastoma.

Dr. Couturier’s lab is dedicated to deconstructing the complect behaviours of brain tumours- from macroscopic imaging to microscopic cellular states – with the goal of identifying molecular targets that can improve both survival and quality of life of patients. His translational approach begins with clinical observations and patient needs, and extends to computational modeling, in vivo systems, and therapeutic innovation, and brought back in full circle to patient care.

Originally from the Atlantic provinces, Dr. Couturier first came to Montreal to attend medical school at the Université de Montréal, and a residency in neurosurgery at The Neuro and the 51³Ô¹ÏÍø Health Centre. His research builds on pioneering work in single-cell RNA sequencing and spatial transcriptomics, which he applied during his PhD at 51³Ô¹ÏÍø and continued in his postdoctoral training, which he pursued at Broad Institute, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. His recent work was published in Nature, and revealed how immune cells within gliomas form distinct spatial niches, and how these microenvironments influence tumor behaviour.

Dr. Couturier is establishing a state-of-the-art lab at The Neuro, equipped with cutting-edge technologies enabling high-resolution multi-omic profiling of tumor tissues. His research aim to tackle key clinical challenges such as tumor invasion, immunosuppression, and peritumoral edema. Dr. Couturier is already actively collaborating with fellow Ludmer Centre principal investigators, Stephanie Zandee, PhD, and Simon Thebault, MD, PhD, on sharing resources and platforms. His integrative and collaborative approach make him an outstanding addition to the Centre.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Couturier to the Ludmer Centre. We look forward to the impactful discoveries his lab will bring to the field of neuro-oncology and beyond!
