Her plan was meant to secure “something in the ord er of self-government” at a time when genuine self-government was impossib le and when many Indigenous leaders had turned away from their traditions. As a model for organizing Indigenous life\, incorporation was a sustainab le solution to community disintegration. However\, it was (and is) neither an antidote to colonialism nor a template for Indigenous self-determinati on. As Kellogg’s efforts demonstrate\, Indigenous communities adopt strate gies\, like incorporation\, because there are no better choices before the m. The risk is that\, over time\, strategy will become reality\, and commu nity members will come to prefer the position of compromise over more radi cal alternatives. But\, in Kellogg’s case\, to be silent in the face of th e rule of another was not impotence but confidence in the resilience of he r community and the unpredictable nature of plural political power.\n DTSTART:20250206T213000Z DTEND:20250206T230000Z LOCATION:Thomson House\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1Y2\, 3650 rue McTavish SUMMARY:RGCS : Avigail Eisenberg “Misunderstanding Self-Government: Laura K ellogg and the Corporation as a Self-Governing Community” URL:/lin-centre/channels/event/rgcs-avigail-eisenberg- misunderstanding-self-government-laura-kellogg-and-corporation-self-govern ing-358263 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
