As a result\, t he political rights of mobilized citizens have been suppressed\, giving ri se to a period of acute turmoil.  60 people have lost their lives\, at lea st 48 of them due to State violence. To legitimize repression\, the State has been using a sustained strategy of criminalization of protesters\, par ticularly targeting grassroots activists and Indigenous movements. This pa nel will analyze the criminalization and consequent dehumanization of raci alized citizens at the margins of the State\, attending to the role it pla ys in the decomposition of Peruvian democracy. In doing so\, it will speak to a broader concern with the rise of authoritarianism in Latin America. \n\nWith panelists (participating via Zoom):\n\n\n Cecilia Méndez Gastelume ndi (Ph.D.)\, History department\, the University of California Santa Barb ara\n Kerly Garavito\, economista\, activista política y miembro del colect ivo Ruray\n\n DTSTART:20230413T163000Z DTEND:20230413T180000Z LOCATION:Room 160 (Arts Council Room)\, Arts Building\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\ , H3A 0G5\, 853 rue Sherbrooke Ouest SUMMARY:Authoritarian turn and dehumanization: roots of the fall of the Per uvian democracy URL:/isid/channels/event/authoritarian-turn-and-dehuma nization-roots-fall-peruvian-democracy-346998 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
