DESCRIPTION:How did John Marrant\, an 18th-century free Black preacher\, na
 vigate the intersections of race\, religion\, and colonial power in the Bl
 ack Atlantic? In this lecture\, Dr. Alphonso F. Saville\, IV explores Marr
 ant’s life\, writings\, and missionary work\, examining how he engaged Chr
 istianity as both a tool of survival and a means of resistance. Drawing fr
 om his recent book\, The Gospel of John Marrant: Conjuring Christianity in
  the Black Atlantic\, Dr. Saville illuminates how Marrant’s narrative resh
 aped early Black religious thought and disrupted dominant understandings o
 f Christian mission and evangelism.\n	\n	This talk in Arts 150 will situate 
 Marrant within broader debates on race\, religion\, and transatlantic netw
 orks\, offering insights into the role of Black spirituality in shaping po
 litical and social movements. Designed for scholars and students alike\, t
 his lecture will challenge conventional interpretations of early African A
 merican religious history and highlight Marrant’s enduring significance in
  conversations about race\, faith\, and resistance.\n	\n	After the talk\, at
