Meet 2022 Global Health Scholar Ericka Iny

51³Ô¹ÏÍøGlobal Health Scholar Ericka Iny is an MDCM student working with Dr. Jeremy Grushka of the Department of Surgery.

Ericka Iny is an MDCM student and a 51³Ô¹ÏÍøGlobal Health Scholar supported by The Medicine Class of 1965 International Health Student Fund. This past summer, Ericka worked with Dr. Jeremy Grushka on Trauma in les Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James: epidemiologic features, transfers and patient outcomes.

"Through my Global Health Scholars project, I am working towards identifying the demographic and epidemiological patterns of injury in les Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James, as well as assess the hidden mortality of trauma in this region. With the limited literature currently available on trauma outcomes within les Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James, I have a keen interest in expanding the knowledge on this topic.

Throughout this project, I have continued to develop a deeper appreciation and understanding of the socioeconomic determinants of health in the context of trauma. I am inspired by the potential this project holds to inspire meaningful policy change to ultimately reduce trauma mortality in les Terres-Cries-de-la-Baie-James."

51³Ô¹ÏÍø is located on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous Peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg Nations. 51³Ô¹ÏÍøhonours, recognizes, and respects these nations as the traditional stewards of the lands and waters on which peoples of the world now gather. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous Peoples from across Turtle Island. We are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.
