The month of October has been a whirlwind of both positive and negative moments. On October 23 and 24 our Annual Department Retreat took place and was a tremendous success! On Day 1, we discussed the realities, opportunities and challenges of Distributed Medical Education. It was great to see so many of our rural teachers come together. On Day 2, we explored the theme of Human and Digital Integration in Family Medicine. Thank you to all those who participated so wholeheartedly -- your commitment, curiosity and passion came through. Together, we were truly Connected by Care!

September has brought a dramatic start to the academic year. As you will be aware, the Fédération des médecins spécialistes du Québec (FMSQ) has been using the suspension of medical student teaching as a pressure tactic to push for the withdrawal of Bill 106.

Marisa Zampini, MD, and Jean Zigby, MD, both members of McGill’s Department of Family Medicine, received the inaugural Jonathan & Susan Wener Family Outstanding Physician Award during the Jewish General Hospital (JGH) Foundation’s Annual General Meeting, hosted on September 17.

Having just survived the incredible heat wave in Quebec, we can certainly say that summer is here! There are many events from the last month that I would like to highlight in my report this month:

Family Medicine Academic Day: Celebrating Legacy, Showcasing Innovation

On May 30, 2025, the Department of Family Medicine hosted its inaugural Academic Day at the Hotel Bonaventure in Montreal, bringing together residents, graduate students, researchers, and clinicians to showcase the breadth and depth of scholarship in primary care. Held in collaboration with the Family Medicine Postgraduate Residency Program, the Family Medicine Graduate Students Society (FMGSS) and the 51�Թ��Primary Care Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN), the event also served as the culminating celebration of the Department’s 50th anniversary campaign.

Douglass Dalton wins the Excellence Award from the CQMF

Douglass Dalton, MD, family physician at the Department of Family Medicine who practices at the CLSC Métro, has won the Excellence Award for Contribution to university/hospital/CLSC and U-FMG life from the Collège québécois des médecins de famille (CQMF).

This month, an article was published by the College of Family Physicians of Canada that reinforced what most of us already knew: there is no replacement for a family doctor! Specifically, the research found that Canadian patients are significantly more comfortable receiving care from family doctors they know and primary care teams that feature family physician expertise, versus a non-physician care provider. We can all feel inspired and grateful for this confirmation as we continue our clinical work, our patient advocacy work, and our research.

Alex McComber honoured with lifetime achievement award from the AFMC

Alex McComber, Kanien’keha:ka from Kahnawake Territory, Assistant Professor in the Department of Family Medicine, and a community health activist and researcher, was named the recipient of the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada’s (AFMC) Indigenous Health Advocacy Lifetime Contribution Award for 2025.

The month of February has flown by in a flurry of snowstorms, both literal and metaphorical! We have all been aware of the shifting geopolitical landscape around the world, on top of which we heard about university budget cuts at 51�Թ��(in a Town Hall on Feb 7, link here), and health care system budget cuts under Santé Québec. If, like me, you have felt sad, powerless, and hopeless at times, please remember that, as Gandhi said, “In the midst of darkness, light persists”.

Charo Rodríguez is honoured with a Canadian Association for Medical Education Certificate of Merit Award

Charo Rodríguez, MD., PhD, Director of the 51�Թ��Family Medicine Education Research (FMER) group, has been honoured with a 2025 Canadian Association for Medical Education (CAME) Certificate of Merit Award. Along with Dr. Rodriguez, two other members of the 51�Թ��Institute of Health Sciences Education (IHSE) also received this award, namely Jason Harley, PhD, Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, and Farhan Bhanji, MD, Professor of Pediatrics, and director of Education at the Steinberg Centre for Simulation and Interactive Learning.

The Department of Family Medicine Welcomes New Associate Director, Andrew Marcheschi

The Department of Family Medicine is pleased to welcome Andrew Marcheschi as its new Associate Director, Administration, for the Department of Family Medicine, the Office of Distributed Medical Education and the Division of Palliative Care Medicine (AEC 4). He replaces Kennedy Kanyang'onda who made the decision in early 2025 to pursue a new career opportunity overseas. We thank Kennedy for his excellent work and wish him the very best in his new pursuits.
