Her talk is entitled: The Haudenosaunee Cycle of Ceremonies: Midwinter\, Time of Rene wal: Affirming our Health and Wellness.\n\n \n\nMidwinter ceremonies mark the start of the new year for the Haudenosaunee (People of the Longhouse).  Ceremony is the expression of thanks and appreciation by the people to th e natural world\, the spirit world and to creator/creation.\n\n \n\n\n When : Thursday\, February 23 from 5.30pm to 7 p.m.\n\n Where: The Department of Family Medicine\, 5858 Côte-des-Neiges\, Montreal (Third floor)\n\n Regist ration\n\n\n \n\nAbout the Speaker\n\nMs. Rourke\, a member of the Akwesas ne Mohawk Nation\, leads the Indigenous Health Professional Program (IHPP) in the ongoing implementation and evolution of its long-term action plan to increase the number of Indigenous students in all health-related profes sional programs. Her work is based on needs and priorities identified by I ndigenous communities\, in particular within the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøRéseau Universitai re Intégré de Santé et Services Sociaux.\n\nMs. Rourke has worked with tra ditional knowledge holders\, teachers and elders\, and has extensive exper tise in strategic planning\, policy development and representing Indigenou s communities. She has a Master’s in Educational Leadership from St. Lawre nce University\, Canton\, NY. Last year she completed the Executive Leader ship Doctoral Program in Social Justice at St. John Fisher College\, Syrac use\, NY.\n\nFrom 2016 to 2018\, Ms. Rourke was the Ontario Community Liai son (Community Outreach and Support Services) for the National Inquiry int o Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls. In this role\, she prov ided trauma-informed support to family members and survivors. She was also responsible for strategic planning of the Community Hearings\, statement gathering and expert knowledge-holder hearings.\n\nSince early 2020\, Ms. Rourke has been a consultant for Rematriation Magazine and the non-profit Kanenhí:io Iokwaiénthos-Sisterhood Gatherings\, part of the Native North A merican Travelling College (NNATC)\, a cultural educational institution an d organization promoting and preserving Kanien’keha (Mohawk) culture and t raditions. From 2014 to 2016\, she served as NNATC’s Executive Director\, and was responsible for operations\, site management and development\, par tnerships with community organizations and cultural workshops.\n\nPrevious ly\, Ms. Rourke held several positions in the Akwesasne community\, includ ing Community Educator for an HIV/AIDS Education Program and Junior Policy Analyst for the Nation Building Program\, Mohawk Council of Akwesasne. Th ere she gained knowledge about self-governance\, Indigenous rights and neg otiations with Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (now replaced by two dep artments\, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada and Indi genous Services Canada) on governance and land jurisdiction.\n\nIn 2021\, Ms. Rourke was a panellist at the UN Food Systems Summit-Indigenous Youth Global Declaration on Sustainable and Resilient Food Systems.
