His insights are drawn from thous ands of hours of observations as an ethnographer in ERs in five different countries. The ER is a snapshot of the “wicked problems and tragic choices ” of contemporary health care. The presentation exemplifies the competing priorities\, tensions and politics that embroil ER health professionals. T he ethical dilemmas and trade-offs we witness belong not only to the ER bu t reflect choices that emergency care poses for wider society. For anyone interested in our current health care system\, particularly its future\, t his lecture on an insider’s perspective of the workings of the critical em ergency services will be thought provoking and illuminating. \n\nThe emerg ency room has long suffered the sharp end of fragmented care in the broade r health care system. An unintended consequence of COVID-19 has been to sh ow how the flexibility of health care professionals and trainees\, who hav e shifted or adapted to collaborative work on the frontlines\, can stitch together coordinative mechanisms that are challenged by super-specialized medicine. Health care organizational and educational systems need to foste r such creativity\, flexibility\, innovation\, critical thinking and inter -professional collaboration\, not only during pandemics but also for futur e routine care.\n\n\nPresentation by Dr. Peter Nugus\n\nDr. Peter Nugus (M A Hons\, MEd\, PhD) is a sociologist and ethnographer\, Acting Director of the 51Թ Practice-Based Research Network\, and Associate Pro fessor in the Department of Family Medicine and the Institute for Health S ciences Education at 51Թ.
