It is com monly expected that warming will result in degradation by drying and\, con sequently\, carbon losses\, but some studies have projected increasing pro ductivity and carbon accumulation in northern mires. Carbon accumulation i s ultimately determined by the balance between plant productivity and deco mposition\, which depends on vegetation and hydrology. Thus\, it is critic al to recognize ongoing vegetation trends and hydrological changes before the question of the fate of northern peatlands as future carbon sinks can be fully solved. My PhD. work focused on recent (1940–present) vegetation trends in boreal aapa mires in a changing climate. I used vegetation resur veys and a spatial chronosequence approach\, both supported by spatial ana lyses of historical and new aerial photographs and Landsat satellite image s. In this presentation\, I will show how species richness\, plant communi ty structure\, spatial patterns of plant functional groups\, and hydrology have changed since the 1940s and discuss the potential causes and implica tions. Most importantly\, this presentation highlights the ongoing transit ions from fen to bog vegetation dominated by Sphagnum mosses\, the most im portant genus for storing carbon as peat.\n DTSTART:20240917T163000Z DTEND:20240917T173000Z SUMMARY:Geotop Seminar Series: Dr. Tiina Kolari URL:/eps/channels/event/geotop-seminar-series-dr-tiina -kolari-359383 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
