Howe\, PhD\n\nAssociate Professor | Department of E pidemiology | Brown University School of Public Health\n\nWhere: Virtual | Zoom\n\nAbstract\n\nCausal diagrams have been extensively used by epidemi ologists to study population health. However\, historically there has been a lack of clarity regarding how best to use causal diagrams to study and eliminate racial health disparities that have persisted in the United Stat es (U.S.). This talk will: (1) provide recommendations for using causal di agrams to study and eliminate U.S.-based racial health disparities\; (2) d iscuss the benefits of these recommendations\; and (3) demonstrate impleme ntation of these recommendations.\n\nLearning Objectives\n\n\n Understand t he difference between a health difference and a health disparity\n Understa nd that race is a social construct\, rather than a biological variable\, a nd how race can be incorporated into a causal diagram\n Understand how to d epict mechanisms of racism as multilevel determinants of health in a causa l diagram\n\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\nDr. Chanelle Howe is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology within the Brown University School of Pu blic Health. She serves as the Director of the Epidemiology Doctoral Progr am at Brown as well as an Associate Editor for the American Journal of Epi demiology. Dr. Howe's research interests include study design\, quantitati ve methods\, causal inference\, infectious diseases\, and health dispariti es.\n\nPresented as part of the Epidemiology Seminar Series\n\nThe Departm ent of Epidemiology\, Biostatistics and Occupational Health Seminar Series is a self-approved Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the maintenance of certification program of the Royal College of Physicians an d Surgeons of Canada\n\n \n DTSTART:20230130T210000Z DTEND:20230130T220000Z SUMMARY:Using Causal Diagrams to Study and Eliminate Racial Health Disparit ies URL:/epi-biostat-occh/channels/event/using-causal-diag rams-study-and-eliminate-racial-health-disparities-344349 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
