Program Requirements

The Kindergarten and Elementary Pédagogie de l'Immersion Française major is designed to meet the needs of students enrolled in the B.Ed. Kindergarten and Elementary program who wish to teach in French immersion contexts. It consists of 30 credits of French and second language education courses embedded within the regular B.Ed. Kindergarten and Elementary program. In addition, certain other course sections may be offered in French.

Please note that graduates of teacher education programs are recommended by the University to the Quebec Ministry of Education for Quebec teacher certification. For more information about teacher certification in Quebec, please refer to the Faculty of Education section under "Overview of Faculty Programs," "Undergraduate Education Programs," and "Quebec Teacher Certification".

Competency in French

Students wishing to follow the Kindergarten and Elementary Pédagogie de l'Immersion Française major must demonstrate a high level of competency in French by: providing proof of graduation from a French language secondary/high school (not French Immersion) or CEGEP; or by placing at the FRSLÌý431 Français fonctionnel avancé. level or higher on the French Language Placement Test (FLPT) at the French Language Centre (McGill).

Pédagogie de l'Immersion Française (PIF) Freshman Year (U0)

Students from outside of Quebec may be required to complete the Freshman en français year (offered through the French Language Centre, Faculty of Arts). Students undertaking the Freshman en français year may also be conditionally accepted into the PIF program, if they have a strong background in French (ex. Grade 12 French Immersion Program) and achieve an acceptable grade in the FLPT.

Those students who are conditionally accepted will be transferred to the PIF program following successful completion of their freshman year (passing grade in level appropriate FRSL courses). Unsuccessful candidates will remain registered in the regular B.Ed. Kindergarten/Elementary stream.

Students should contact to indicate their desire to transfer into this major and will need to provide proof of French Language Competency, as outlined above for the transfer to be accepted/processed.

The English Exam for Teacher Certification (EETC) is a Quebec Ministry of Education-required component of the B.Ed. degree. The exam is coordinated by an independent organization, the Centre for the English Exam for Teacher Certification (CEETC). Consists of a 2-hour exam designed to assess teacher candidates' competency in the language of instruction. Must be completed before the 3rd Field Experience. Students must register for EDEC 215 and register for the EETC on the CEETC website. Students who do not pass after four attempts require permission from the Internships Student Affairs Office to re-take the exam.

Eligibility /Admission Criteria


Students who are interested in the Bachelor of Education Kindergarten/Elementary Pédagogie de l'immersion Française (PIF) major must first be accepted into the Bachelor of Education Kindergarten/Elementary program before pursuing theÌýPédagogie de l'immersion Française (PIF) major.Ìý

French Language Proficiency

Applicants to the Bachelor of Education Kindergarten/Elementary Education - Pédagogie de l’immersion française (PIF) program who meet the academic admission requirements, must also demonstrate a high level of aptitude in French by either:

  • Meeting the requirements to be exempted

OR

  • Passing the 51³Ô¹ÏÍøTest de Français Admission - PIF (TFA-PIF)

Conditions for Exemption:

To be exempt from taking the test, you must provide documentation demonstrating:

  • You have attended a high school and/or university for at least four consecutive years at a French-language institution; or
  • You have attended a high school for at least four consecutive years at a French-language institution and completed a DEC at an English CEGEP; or
  • You have attended at least three consecutive years at a French-language university in Quebec; or
  • You have completed a DEC at a French-language CEGEP as well as secondary V in a French-language institution in Quebec.

Students who do not meet the exemption requirements will register for the next available 51³Ô¹ÏÍøPIF Admission Test when instructed to do so by the Admissions Office via their .

The purpose of the test is to determine whether the applicant’s level of French meet the standards required for future PIF teachers. The 51³Ô¹ÏÍøPIF Admission Test consists of a written portion followed by an individual oral interview and is administered by McGill’s French Language Centre. Students who do not pass the test will be offered admission to the regular B.Ed in Kindergarten and Elementary Education program.
