This seems good\, because large samples generally contain more information than small ones. However\, inference in large samples can actually be harder than in small ones. Hypothesis tests and confidence intervals are often based on the assumption that every obs ervation is independent of every other observation. But violations of this assumption are far more consequential for large samples than for small on es. If the observations naturally fall into a modest number of clusters an d are correlated within each cluster\, then the information content of a l arge sample may be only slightly greater than that of a much smaller sampl e. Moreover\, failing to account for clustering can lead to much bigger mi stakes when a sample is large than when it is small. These points are illu strated graphically using both simulated and actual data.\n\nRegistration: \n This event is free and is open to anyone interested in the topic. Howeve r\, due to limited seating\, registration is required. The deadline to reg ister is October 9 at 5 pm.\n DTSTART:20231013T193000Z DTEND:20231013T213000Z LOCATION:Faculty Club Ballroom \, Faculty Club\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0 E5\, 3450 rue McTavish SUMMARY:Davidson Distinguished Lecture in Econometrics with Prof. James Mac Kinnon URL:/economics/channels/event/davidson-distinguished-l ecture-econometrics-prof-james-mackinnon-350385 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
