Loeb Associate Professor of the Humanities \n\nHarvard University \n\n \n\nDrawing on current book projects on Chinese broadcasting and film exhibition\, this talk excavates a media history of loudspeakers and open -air cinema through the conceptual framework of “socialist hot noise”: a p articipatory sociothermic affect and a synergy between body and electricit y that soldered scattered populations into the revolutionary masses. The f irst half examines the growth of loudspeaker networks and grassroots sonic practices\, from broadcast rallies to sparrow warfare\, from labor compet itions to quasi-karaoke\, from enhancing the Mao cult to engendering viole nce and terror. The second half discusses open-air cinema as a hot noise o f attractions that generated revolutionary energy through cinematic liturg ies led by mobile projectionists before\, during\, and after screenings. M aoist audiovisual propaganda\, I propose\, was at once a physical and spir it medium\, whose improvised and impoverished infrastructure contributed t o the Mao cult\, converted skeptics of communist miracles\, and exorcized class enemies. The conclusion addresses the revival of loudspeakers and op en-air cinema in a postsocialist media ecology. \n\n \n\nWednesday\, Novem ber 10th\, 2021 \n\n3:30-5:00 p.m. ET \n\nThe lecture will be hosted on Zo om: \n\nhttps://mcgill.zoom.us/j/89523242958\n DTSTART:20211110T203000Z DTEND:20211110T220000Z SUMMARY:Socialist Hot Noise: Loudspeakers and Open-Air Cinema in Mao’s Chin a URL:/eas/channels/event/socialist-hot-noise-loudspeake rs-and-open-air-cinema-maos-china-334512 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
