In Memoriam: Dr. David Shannon

A stalwart of the Division of General Internal Medicine, Dr. David Shannon, passed away on October 12, 2025. Easily recognized by his signature bow tie, white mustache, radio voice, and bermuda shorts (when weather allowed), David taught generations of trainees at the Montreal General Hospital, many of whom are now faculty members. Alongside his emergency room consultation and clinical teaching unit supervision, he had a large outpatient practice in community-based GIM, a perspective that he brought to his teaching. He had an immense dedication to UGME students, to his clinic, and ensuring that the art of medicine was at the centre of their discussions.

He served as the Transition to Clinical Practice MGH site director for many years and, in 2019-2020, received the TCP Award for Excellence in Clinical Teaching. We will miss David’s warmth, kindness, and wisdom. We offer our deep condolences to his wife Valerie, herself a celebrated Director of Nursing, their children, Christopher (Courtney) and Grant (Jackie), and their families.

There will be a memorial service for Dr. Shannon at St. James United Church, 463 St. Catherine St. West on November 15 at 11 AM. The family welcomes donations to Amnesty International or the MGH Foundation.

To to the family or in memory of James, please .
