The objective of this semina r is to familiarize the participants with various health research approach es and how all of these play important roles in improving health in indivi duals and populations. Dr. Stone will discuss the age-old nature vs. nurtu re debate will be revisited with a new twist. Growing evidence suggests th at environmental factors\, including the experiences of our parents\, can fundamentally alter the function of our genes\, change our behavior and in crease risk factors for a wide range of chronic conditions. The potential implications of these recent insights on the role of socioeconomic factors in public health will be highlighted. Dr. Feine will present the argument that double-blind randomized clinical trials are not the best way to asse ss the efficacy of palliative therapies for chronic conditions. She will p resent studies in chronic pain and oral implants for complete denture pros theses to support this hypothesis. Dr. Bedos will explain how qualitative research has changed his life and transformed his research. Dr. Srivastava will briefly talk about her journey of discovering her relationship with the society as a researcher- from being a neutral outsider to a liberal re lativist to an overt partisan. She will highlight the potential of partici patory action research in changing/informing policies with several example s\, including her PhD research proposal.
