Dr. Quoc Nguyen honoured with W.W. Wood Award for Excellence in Dental Education

Dr. Quoc Nguyen, Assistant Professor of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry, has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to dental education with the 2025 W.W. Wood Award. Presented by the Association of Canadian Faculties of Dentistry, this award commemorates Dr. Bill Wood, whose career exemplified dedication to research, teaching, and service. Nominations for the award can be made by students, alumni or other faculty members.

Dr. Nguyen's career in dentistry began with his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree from Université de Montréal in 2011. After completing a General Practice Residency program at the University of British Columbia, he pursued a specialization in Prosthodontics at the University of Minnesota. His return to Montreal marked the beginning of a dedicated academic career; at McGill, he has demonstrated a passion for educating future dental professionals and serving underserved communities.

A meaningful recognition

Reflecting on receiving the award during the recent Convocation Awards Ceremony at the 51ԹFaculty Club, Dr. Nguyen expresses his gratitude and surprise: “Winning the W.W. Wood Award was completely unexpected, and it means a great deal to me. Teaching is something I’ve poured a lot of time, energy, and dedication into—often without realizing just how much of myself I was investing. To be recognized by the students themselves, and in the presence of colleagues I deeply respect, is incredibly meaningful.”

He also emphasizes the significance of acknowledging educators in the field: “this kind of recognition matters because teaching often goes unnoticed. It demands empathy, resilience, patience, and a deep commitment to helping others grow. Educators at all levels deserve more acknowledgment for the impact they make every day.”

A philosophy rooted in empathy and critical thinking

Dr. Nguyen's approach to teaching focuses on guiding students through inquiry-based learning. Rather than simply providing answers, he encourages them to think critically and solve problems independently. In clinical and laboratory settings, Dr. Nguyen prioritizes demonstration, believing that students learn best by observing properly executed procedures. “I like to guide students by asking questions and encouraging them to think through problems rather than simply giving them answers. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching is seeing in their eyes when a concept finally makes sense to them,” he explains.

He credits his mentor, Dr. Charles Stendahl, as an influence on his patient and generous teaching style. He extends this recognition to “all the great teachers who shaped who I am today—they continue to inspire the way I teach and connect with students.”

A message to the graduating Class of 2025

Dr. Nguyen concludes his reflections with a message for graduating students: “You’ve gone from mildly confused students to slightly less confused professionals, and I call that progress! This milestone is just the beginning—stay curious, stay humble, and most importantly, stay in touch. We’re always here to support you.”

His dedication to dental education continues to inspire students and colleagues alike, solidifying his position as an exceptional educator in the field. Congratulations, Dr. Nguyen, for this well-deserved honour!
