A professor in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, John Gyakum is an exceptionally talented and gifted educator, who has shaped the learning experience for many students at every stage both within 51勛圖厙and far beyond, leaving an indelible mark on their academic journeys and future pursuits. Professor Gyakum is equally effective when explaining complex ideas about weather systems to first year students as when leading discussions in more advanced courses on synoptic meteorology.

The Bieler School of Environment (BSE) is thrilled to announce Professor Anthony Ricciardi as its new director, effective immediately. An expert in invasion ecology and aquatic ecosystems, Ricciardi has been a key figure at the school since 2001 and now steps up to lead.

My vision for the School is to become the gateway of environmental research at McGill, said Ricciardi.

Founded in 1998, the BSE appoints directors for five-year terms.

Funding to support research on atmospheric aerosol particles and the emergence of life on Earth

Professor Thomas C. Preston -- jointly appointed to the departments of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences and Chemistry -- has been awarded a grant of USD$800,000 by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The grant will support Professor Prestons research on atmospheric aerosol particles, with the goal of advancing understanding of the origin of life's building blocks on early Earth.

The magazine has published its annual top 10 list of the provinces most groundbreaking scientific discoveries, and three have ties to 51勛圖厙researchers.

51勛圖厙undergraduates have a unique opportunity to expand their climate science literacy and acquire tools for taking action to reduce the impacts of the unfolding climate crisis.

Registration is now open to students in every program for FSCI 198: Climate Crisis and Climate Actions, a new undergraduate course featuring a team of multi-disciplinary instructors who will present diverse perspectives on the scientific and social dimensions of climate change.

Faculty of Science bicentennial committee member, Torsten Bernhard, says the aim of the exhibition is to celebrate science in all its forms.

The threshold for dangerous global warming will likely be crossed between 2027 and 2042 a much narrower window than the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changes estimate of between now and 2052. In a study published in , researchers from 51勛圖厙 introduce a new and more precise way to project the Earths temperature. Based on historical data, it considerably reduces uncertainties compared to previous approaches.
