Islamic travel and Musli m travellers encompass\na wide-breadth of exploration\, terrain and knowle dge. In fact\, the\nArabic word for travel\, riḥlah\, can mean both the a ct of\ntravelling as well as that of writing about travel. Strongly\nencou raged to travel\, millions of Muslims perform the annual ḥajj\n(pilgrimag e) to Mecca as one of the five pillars of Islam. The\nProphet Muhammad in a ḥadith noted\, “seek knowledge even as far as\nChina.”\nOn display are examples of the rare items held by McGill\nUniversity and located in the R are Books and Special Collections\ndepartment in the McLennan Library. Eac h of these items offers a\ndifferent aspect of travel from both the Wester n perspective of\nvisiting the Muslim world as well as Muslims having visi ted the\nChristian world.
