Equity and Excellence in Academic Recruitment

This workshop is designed for members of academic search committees and will explore various topics such as Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) imperatives in the Canadian academy, obligations and objectives under Quebec legislation and McGill's employment equity policy, and strategies and tools for enhancing equity in the recruitment and review process.

By attending this workshop, participants will be better able to:

  • Deepen their understanding of the context, commitments, and policy/legal framework for employment equity at McGill
  • Plan and implement a recruitment process that is both active and strategic across the all stages of the search
  • Consider the role bias can play in shaping selection and review, and how best to take steps to minimize its impact
  • Develop steps for an effective, strategic, and equitable academic search that leads to the recruitment and appointment of excellent candidates

Note that this workshop is required for all members of academic search committees. Faculty serving on search committees need to attend this session every three years in order to refresh and/or update their knowledge. This workshop is based on peer-reviewed literature and participants will have access upon request to supplemental information with material relevant to the field in which their search is being conducted.
