In this talk\, we move from making friends on a quiet street in Denmark to friendships in Jordan and finally to friendship and the possibility of tr ansformative solidarity in anthropology. When invisible\, affective gestur es are captured ethnographically in all their singularity\, can we be an a nthropologist like a friend? One primary ethical demand in friendship is t hat you do not tell your friends’ secrets\, no matter what. When this dema nd is translated into being an anthropologist like a friend\, it often lea ds to seemingly endless discussions about how to tell the story of what em erges in-between—how to make that story both an expression of a relationsh ip and a more general view of the world\, without becoming a tell-tale\, a nd how to best honor your friend’s desires against powers that may seek to eradicate those desires altogether. Through the lens of anthropology\, th is talk examines how friendships—often full of personal secrets and intima cies—inform and complicate our positionalities and the purpose of the work we do. As illuminated by Leela Gandhi's work on radical possibility and t he politics of friendship (2006)\, the talk considers the productive and a t times frustrating tension between relational ethics of trust and intimac y\, professional responsibility\, and the potential for a radical politics of friendship that resists colonial narratives and embraces unfinished re lations and transformative solidarity.\n\nFor additional information\, ple ase contact Setrag Manoukian: setrag.manoukian [at] mcgill.ca\n\n \n DTSTART:20250212T173000Z DTEND:20250212T193000Z LOCATION:Room 116\, Peterson Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 0E6\, 3460 rue McTavish SUMMARY:'Old Woman of Nishapur' series - Marie Odgaard (University of Toron to) URL:/anthropology/channels/event/old-woman-nishapur-se ries-marie-odgaard-university-toronto-362510 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
